The structural upgrade and conversion of an existing five storey commercial building in Auckland’s CBD presented unique design challenges. The client brief required the creation of loft style apartments and three additional levels in order to maximise the development potential of the site.
Significant exploratory investigations and successive design proposals were required to find the best solution for the structural upgrade of the original building, identified as ‘character defining’ by Auckland Council.
Through close collaboration with clients, contractors and engineers, PB&A secured consent for three additional levels above the existing building, allowing for the creation of a total of 28 residential apartments.
The sustainable re-use of an existing building, and the conversion of a previously untenanted space into residential apartments close to public transport and urban infrastructure, achieved a desirable outcome for both the client and the city itself.
