Perched on top of the Te Kāhui Whaihanga New Zealand Institute of Architects’ Auckland Local Architecture award winning Ponsonby Central II the Caretakers Apartment takes advantage of its panoramic views of Auckland with its park-life roof terraces and predominately glazed façade that peals back, achieving seamless indoor-outdoor flow. The brief was to design an apartment that echoed the eclectic nature and grittiness of the building’s lower levels, with entertaining at its centre. With three bedrooms, three bathrooms, two living areas, an office and open plan kitchen and dining – the apartment has been designed with a more generous mode of living in mind. The considered composition of the apartment’s floorplan ensures that its aspect is fully taken advantage of, with a reduction of circulation fiving way to a greater functionality of space with finer interior architectural elements providing a sense of home.
The success of the apartments interior design is in the high-quality finishes and fixtures throughout. The centre piece of the apartment, the kitchen mimics, the industrial nature of the building’s lower levels, with accents of steel, marble, and fluted glass whilst the reclaimed brick to the corridor is the same brick to the base of the building, bringing the exterior into the apartment. Bronze accents throughout the apartment(hardware and tapware) give the essence of luxury. The considered material palette strengthens the design ethos, the outcome – a truly unique home with a material richness, raw and honest, bathed in an abundance of natural light.
