One of Auckland’s first new build apartment developments after the global financial crisis, the challenge presented by this project was to generate quality design on a restricted budget in a tentative market environment.
Located in a boutique inner-city neighbourhood with a rich pedigree of historic and contemporary buildings, the site also demanded a design response which complemented and enhanced the immediate architectural context.
Form, aesthetic and material draw character from the immediate environment. Brick panelling references the district’s brick-making history, while precast concrete and raw steel complement the industrial vibe of the mixed-use neighbourhood. A large glass-reinforced concrete façade – which addresses the street and creates privacy for occupants – draws design elements from the stained glass windows of nearby St Benedict’s church.
Recently short listed for an NZIA award, the success of The Saint development has generated several new projects for the client, and further collaboration with PB&A.
